Material Study: Concrete

Concrete /ˈkɒŋkriːt/

A building material made from aggregates, sand, cement, and water that becomes a mass resembling stone on hardening.

One of the things I find fascinating about concrete is its malleability (before it hardens). Concrete allows us to explore our creativity while creating products that people can connect with.

My fascination with concrete started with a desire to create something tangible with my hands. Inspired by observing Italian craftsmen and their dedication to creating quality products with simple materials, minimal tools, and admirable attention to detail, I started exploring locally available materials in search of something that I, and ultimately end users, could connect with on a sensory level.

Concrete as a building material means most of our homes are concrete. It is an element with which we all have a connection. Our objects reduce this otherwise large-scale material to smaller, more relatable forms that users can interact with.

With the help of masons, civil engineers, and months of experiments, we created our concrete mix. Our concrete mix incorporates various aggregates that would otherwise have been trash. It has recently evolved to include glass, plastic, and other solid waste items, reducing waste while increasing the strength of our objects.

Another interesting feature of concrete is its range of surface textures. Concrete is raw, simple, and honest. To maintain these important elements, we opted to add colour pigments within our concrete mix as opposed to surface painting the concrete and covering up its natural texture.

I look forward to exploring more of our creativity and ideas while fostering a community of people who understand our obsession with Concrete and mindfulness.
